EDMONTON – A fine dust swirled around George Poitras as he marched with about 200 others along Highway 63 in the third annual Tar Sands Healing Walk near Fort McMurray Saturday.

“It’s like being in a desert in a sand storm, I imagine,” Poitras said of the grit that had people tying shirts around their faces in makeshift masks as they passed tailings ponds along Highway 63.

The coverings also helped block people’s nostrils from smells along the 13 kilometre route, which passes by refineries and other oil operations.
